The Hunter–Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) is NSW's flagship effort to replace retiring coal generation with coordinated renewable, storage and transmission capacity. It's driven by the mandated closure of AGL's Liddell and Bayswater power stations through the late 2020s and early 2030s, leaving the Hunter region with significant capacity to replace and strong existing grid infrastructure to reuse.

The REZ targets up to 1 GW in the initial phase with a pathway to around 8 GW over time. Scope spans transmission corridor earthworks and easement preparation, substation builds at key nodes, wind and solar generator connection points, battery energy storage systems, and access road construction across multiple local government areas.

EnergyCo NSW is running the access scheme and coordinating the network. Transmission packages have been progressing through procurement, with generator project registrations continuing. Final configuration of the transmission backbone is being refined as developers confirm their own project delivery timelines.

Equipment demand is heavy in civil earthworks, haulage, crane work, and temporary site services across a dispersed multi-site footprint. Sub-tier operators with heavy plant can align into package-level subcontract work through the primary transmission and generator EPC contractors.

Opportunity

Long-build timelines suit multi-year contract-aligned structures. Subcontractors positioning now can lock in early packages and structure finance around the work programme.
