Metro Tunnel is a new twin-tunnel rail corridor through the Melbourne CBD that separates the Sunbury–Cranbourne/Pakenham line from the City Loop, adding significant network capacity and enabling larger, more frequent trains. It links directly into new underground stations at major demand nodes including the hospital/university precinct at Parkville.

Scope comprises 9km of twin tunnels, five new underground stations (Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall, Anzac), new rolling stock (High Capacity Metro Trains), signalling upgrades to High Capacity Signalling, portal structures at South Kensington and South Yarra, and station precinct works.

Tunnelling and station box civil works are complete. Systems integration, testing and commissioning are in advanced stages, with staged opening of services and precinct activation taking place. Full operations are expected to commence in late 2025 through early 2026 depending on signalling system cutover.

Equipment demand through commissioning is specialty plant for fit-out, precinct public realm works, landscaping, and utility finishes. Sub-tier operators with specialty rail plant can target follow-on works across the network.

Opportunity

Precinct works and fit-out packages suit smaller operators with specialty construction plant.
