Port Hedland Expansion
Iron ore port capacity expansion. Bulk materials handling, haul roads, and wharf works.
Port Hedland is the world's largest iron-ore export port by tonnage, and ongoing expansion works are driven by BHP, Fosterville and FMG (Fortescue) shipping growth, plus emerging lithium and battery-materials export volumes. The Pilbara Ports Authority coordinates common-user infrastructure while producer-specific berths and stockyards are delivered by resource companies.
Scope across current and programmed work includes new shiploaders, dredging and channel improvements, rail-to-ship materials handling upgrades, tug and marine service vessel base expansion, additional stockyard capacity, and ancillary haul-road and shore-power facilities. Producers run parallel programs at their respective Nelson Point (BHP) and Finucane Island facilities.
Current work progresses on multiple fronts across marine, civil and materials-handling disciplines. Exact contract packaging moves with producer capex cycles and common-user investment decisions. Delivery is typically via Tier-1 marine and civil contractors with significant sub-tier subcontracting for remote-area logistics.
Equipment demand is heavy in earthworks, haulage, wheel loaders, heavy transport trailers, marine support plant, and specialist long-reach excavators for dredging support. Pilbara-based operators typically hold an advantage on mobilisation and cost compared to operators trucking plant in from Perth or further east.
Remote WA contracting favours specialist operators with large-asset fleets and project-backed finance.
